Akinfenwa targets Championship
Adebayo Akinfenwa intends to return to action with Swansea in the Championship.
Swansea City striker Adebayo Akinfenwa has told skysports.com that he intends to return to action with the club in the Championship.
The Swans' powerhouse forward will miss the rest of the season after breaking his leg in the match against Scunthorpe United back in February, but insists the squad is good enough to win the League One play-off battle.
"There's so much talent in that squad at the moment, and I'm confident we can make it up through the play-offs," Akinfenwa told skysports.com.
"Obviously there has been some turbulence at the club this season with Kenny Jackett leaving and Roberto Martinez coming in, but the new gaffer has made his mark immediately and if the players carry on their recent form then I think we can make it."
Swansea lost last year's League One play-off final to Barnsley on penalties, but Akinfenwa - who received an injury boost over Easter after being told that there will be no lasting damage to his broken leg - believes that the pain of that defeat will only serve to spur his side on this time around.
"Maybe there has been a bit of a hangover from the disappointment of last season, because we've never found really long spells of consistency this term, but I'm in at the club every day and the spirits are high," he continued.
"You can see that Roberto is having a real effect on all of the players, and they are beginning to gel to his methods and styles."
However optimistically he rates Swansea's chances this term, Akinfenwa admitted that Torquay's hopes of pulling off a great escape from the foot of League Two seem slim.
"I had some good times down there and it's such a shame that they look as if they are going to lose their league status. They just haven't created enough this season and they've been punished.
"When I was there we had Tony Bedeau, Leon Constantine and Jo Kuffour as strikers, along with myself. With Alex Russell gone as well I don't think anyone can be surprised that they are where they find themselves, but I can only hope they come back stronger because it's a great club."
