Hughes to battle for Benni
Mark Hughes does not want the summer spent fending off interest in Benni McCarthy.
Blackburn chief Mark Hughes has admitted that he does not want to spend the summer fending off interest in Benni McCarthy. The South African forward has made a decent impression following his move from Porto last summer.
Hughes feels the forward will only improve as he adapts to the English game and is not contemplating selling the striker in the summer.
"I spent most of this time last year fighting off interest in my players and I hope I don't have to do that with Benni," said Hughes.
"He signed a four-year contract and his attitude has been first-class even though he has struggled to adapt to English football sometimes.
"Craig Bellamy was a big player to replace when he left and Benni - who we tracked for 18 months at Porto - has come in and done a great job."
Hughes is convinced Rovers will be a force to be reckoned with next term.
He added: "I will be adding players to the squad in the summer and with people like Robbie Savage, Steven Reid and Andre Ooijer to come back from injuries, Blackburn is going to be a great place to play."
