Helmes delays Bayer move

Cologne striker Patrick Helmes is to join Bayer Leverkusen in 2008.

Cologne striker Patrick Helmes is to join Bayer Leverkusen when his current contract expires in 2008.

Helmes had originally agreed to join Bayer this summer, but the move was prevented after the German Football League (DFL) ruled that Cologne had taken advantage of an option on his contract.

"I will not be signing any new contracts beyond 2008 at Cologne," Helmes told Kicker.

"Not now or at any time next season - whatever happens on the pitch between now and then."

Helmes is widely regarded as one of the top striking talents in German football and was called up for his international debut by Germany boss Joachim Low against Denmark in March.
