SWP: I have improved
Shaun Wright-Phillips believes life at Chelsea has made him a stronger player.
Shaun Wright-Phillips admits life at Chelsea has been difficult, but believes it has made him a stronger player.
The former Manchester City winger moved to Stamford Bridge for £21m in July 2005, but has struggled for form and playing time during much of his time under Jose Mourinho.
There were strong rumours he could leave in January, with clubs including West Ham, Manchester City and Aston Villa all thought to be interested in his services.
However, he rejected the chance to leave so that he could fight for his Chelsea future and good recent form appears to have justified his decision.
"I didn't want to quit," he told the Daily Express. "I went there to be a great player and improve myself.
"I didn't want to hang up after a year - I wanted to stick it out and show that I am capable. I believe in my ability."
While Wright-Phillips acknowledges that things have not been easy since his arrival, he feels his time on the bench has added another dimension to his game.
"It has been tough. It has helped me, to be honest," added Wright-Phillips.
"It has made me mentally stronger and has taught me how to be a bit-part player, rather than always expecting to play 90 minutes.
"Now I have learnt how, if I get 20 minutes, I can help the team either defend or win a game.
"It has taught me that."
