Valencia have moved three points behind Liga leaders Barcelona following a 2-0 win over Recreativo. The home side began the better of the teams, but David Silva's blast over the bar was all they had to show for their efforts.
The visitors were lucky not to lose their keeper when Javier Lopez Vallejo picked up a booking for appearing to handle outside the area.
Recreativo played well for two thirds of the contest, but once Joaquin broke the deadlock on the hour mark there was no coming back.
David Villa did well down the right and he played a clever pass for the former Real Betis man to stroke home past Lopez Vallejo.
His second of the night and third of the season arrived shortly after when he connected with Silva's cross to the back post.
The win moves Che above Real Zaragoza in the Liga table and into fourth, raising their hopes of mounting a serious title challenge.
Earlier in the day, Real Betis claimed a point in their battle against the drop after securing a goalless draw at Atletico Madrid.
