De Haan: Drenthe not ready
Foppe de Haan has warned Royston Drenthe may not be ready for the Premier League.
Holland Under 21 coach Foppe de Haan has warned that Feyenoord starlet Royston Drenthe may not be ready for a move to the Premiership. The energetic wide-man has impressed vividly during the European Under 21 Championship in his homeland, reportedly attracting the interest of a range of English clubs including Chelsea and Aston Villa in the process.
However, speaking after his side's 4-1 victory over Serbia in the final, de Haan sounded a note of caution about the transfer talk surrounding Drenthe, even if he was more confident about Arsenal target Ryan Babel's ability to make an impact in the Premier League.
"They are good enough, but they are very young," de Haan told Sky Sports.
"Babel was playing very good today, Drenthe was not so good today, but in the days before he was very good.
"For Drenthe it is too early I think, but Babel? Maybe."
De Haan's side were in unstoppable form in Groningen as they cruised past a Serbia side that had proved dangerous earlier in the tournament.
Holland also won the competition last year, and de Haan was delighted to retain the title for his country.
"Last year we won, but if you win a second time it is always more difficult," de Haan added.
"We have won now for the second time so this is my achievement.
"Tomorrow when I wake up and think what happened? 'Oh yeah We won again!' That is magnificent."
With the next finals in 2009, de Haan will not rule out a hat-trick of titles, but the Under 21 boss has no designs on the senior job with Oranje.
"I don't know, it is 2009, then I am maybe 66, but as I am now I think I can do it [another Under 21 Championship].
"Marco van Basten is doing the senior team until 2008 and we will see then, but I don't think about that."
