Forlan in Atletico warning
Diego Forlan has warned he does not want to be Fernando Torres' understudy.
Diego Forlan has warned that if he joins Atletico Madrid, it will not be as a backup for Fernando Torres.Atletico are believed to be closing in on the former Manchester United striker, although Valencia also hold an interest in Forlan following an impressive three years in Spain for the Uruguayan international.
If Forlan does move to Vicente Calderon, then his wish to avoid being Torres' understudy may be granted as Liverpool are believed to be in advanced negotiations for Atletico's star player.
The Primera Liga club have denied a deal is in place for 'El Nino' at present though, and if he does happen to remain in the Spanish capital, then Forlan will not play second fiddle.
"I don't know if I'll end up going there, but if I go it won't be to replace Torres when he isn't playing," Forlan told Punto Radio.
"We're different players and persons in different places. If I go it will be because it's a step forward (for my career), like with Manchester United and Villarreal."
Forlan refused to elaborate on whether he would rather sign for Atletico or Valencia, as he remains a Villarreal player at present.
"For the moment I'm still under contract with Villarreal, so it's a time for them to talk about the offers and see what I would like most.
"It's hard to say what's happening now since there aren't so many clubs that could take me."
