Teddy Sheringham has joined Colchester United on a free transfer after leaving West Ham.
The former England striker, 41, will continue his playing career in the Championship after making 20 top-flight appearances last season.
"Teddy is a top player and I think it is an indication of how well the squad did last year that he is willing to come down and play with them," manager Geraint Williams told the club's official website.
Despite earlier reports, Sheringham will not be undertaking a coaching role at Layer Road but Williams remains convinced that the player's vast experience at the top will prove invaluable to his squad.
"If you can't learn off the best then you never will.
"Teddy is renowned for his touch and his movement and I think the other players will benefit from playing up close with him, both in games and in training.
"That's the case for all the lads, not just the young players - for example, he can let the midfielders and defenders know where he wants to receive the ball."
However, Williams insists that Sheringham will be treated like any other member of the squad.
"We are delighted that Teddy's coming, but he knows that it's not going to be just about him - he will be a key part of the squad and one of the team once we're up and running."
