Ross County manager Jim McIntyre felt his side thoroughly deserved their first victory of the season in a 2-1 win against Dundee.

An injury time winner from substitute Darren Maatsen, after Dundee's David Clarkson had earlier cancelled out a Michael Gardyne opener, earned the Dingwall men their first points of the campaign.

Speaking after the game at the Global Energy Stadium, the County boss said: "Credit to the boys. I thought they gave absolutely everything. We should have been comfortably ahead in the first half.

"We really were excellent. The Dundee goal was the least we deserved. I felt we were the better side and deserved to win it."

McIntryre expressed his delight with the response he got from his players after Dundee had levelled the contest mid-way through the second half.

"We kept going. That's the big things we've been trying to work on, showing a reaction to a setback - whether it's a bad pass or a goal against you," he added.

"That's a mindset thing. You have to have that positivity and make sure you keep going.

"We've been banging the drum on that, if you like - and I'm absolutely delighted with their reactions. We know there will be days when it doesn't happen but as long as they show they're willing to react to whatever disappointment goes against them, that's all you can ask as a manager."

McIntryre admitted the win came as a big relief, adding: "It's huge, of course it is.

"I'm really pleased. But we need to work our back-sides off to earn anything in this league. Today, we got the break with the late goal but it was no more than we deserved."

Speaking during a week which saw his side lose two derbies to feirce rivals United, Dark Blues boss Paul Hartley said: "It is a sickener to lose out so late, pretty much the last kick of the ball.

"We'd have taken a point because we were well below par, to be honest - it wasn't a good performance. To lose the goal in the last minute is a real blow.

"We just didn't play well. From the standards we set on Wednesday night in the derby defeat, we were well below that.

"We looked really leggy today but that's no excuse - we've all played the same amount this week. We just didn't perform to the same high level we have in the last few weeks."
