Sky Bet League Two: Nigel Worthington resigns as York City manager

Nigel Worthington has resigned as manager of League Two side York City.

Saturday's 3-1 defeat at Newport County left the club in 22nd place in the table, just one point above the relegation zone.

The club confirmed the news on Monday morning via its official Twitter account.

"After Saturday's result and in the best interests of York City, I have made the difficult decision to leave the club," Worthington, who has presided over just one win in 14 games in all competitions, said in a short statement also released via social media.

"I feel the timing of my departure will give the players ample number of games to gain the points needed.

"In recent weeks, performances have not been up to my high standards and I take full responsibility for this as manager."

The former Northern Ireland boss vacates a position he had held since March 2013.

The 52-year-old took York to the League Two play-offs last season on the back of a remarkable 17-game unbeaten streak but they were knocked out at the semi-final stage by Fleetwood.

Sky Bet initially installed assistant boss Steve Torpey as the favourite to take over but Russ Wilcox - sacked recently by Scunthorpe - has now emerged at the head of their next York manager market.
