The Scottish champions proved too strong for their Championship opponents with Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink (2), Scott Brown, Andrea Capone and Scott McDonald all finding the net for Gordon Strachan's men.

Italian trialist Capone did his chances of earning a move to Parkhead no harm at all with the opening goal on 22 minutes with a long-range strike.

Brown doubled the lead six minutes before the break with his first goal for the club.

Vennegoor of Hesselink added a third goal on 54 minutes with a drilled finish from the edge of the box.

Two minutes later the big Dutchman grabbed his second of the contest with a simple finish.

Youngster Kieron St Aimie pulled a goal back for Rangers on 65 minutes to give the home fans something to cheer about.

Substitute McDonald completed the rout with Celtic's fifth on 73 minutes after being set up by Kenny Miller.
