Abbey to join Crewe

Former Port Vale defender George Abbey is set to sign a one-year contract with Crewe.

Former Port Vale defender George Abbey is set to sign a one-year contract with Crewe.

Abbey was released by Port Vale at the end of last season after two-and-a-half seasons at the club.

The 28-year-old has been training with Crewe and has been offered a 12-month deal by The Railwaymen.

"We only have five defenders, so it is important we bring in another couple," assistant manager Neil Baker told the Sentinel.

"I don't think we will drop on a player with more experience than George Abbey at this stage and I think he will sign."

Meanwhile, trialist Ryan Lynch is also expected to join Crewe on a one-year contract.

The 20-year-old left-back was released by Coventry but has impressed the coaching staff at Gresty Road.

Baker added: "I think Ryan will accept, but you never know. We are expecting a decision today."
