Scan boost for defender
Southend manager Steve Tilson has revealed that Steven Hammell did not break his leg, but still faces a spell on the sidelines.
The League One side feared they could be without the defender for much of the season, after he was stretchered off in a recent friendly clash with Crawley.
Scans have revealed that Hammell has instead strained tendons, but the 25-year-old still faces a month out of action.
"It's obviously better news than we were first fearing," Tilson told the club's official website.
"Losing Stevie for a month this close to the start of the season isn't the best preparation but it could have been a lot worse."
