Ajax closed the gap on the top of the Eredivisie to a single point with 2-0 victory at home to FC Groningen.

Playing their first match following the winter break, the Amsterdam club took the lead after 15 minutes through Ricardo Kishna.

A last-minute own goal from Johan Kappelhof then made sure of the win which lifts Ajax to within a point of leaders PSV Eindhoven, who travel to Vitesse on Saturday.

Groningen, meanwhile, have not won in the league since the end of November and remain eighth.
