Clubs step up hunt for Portuguese ace

Skysports.com understands several English clubs are set to step up their interest in Benfica ace Nuno Gomes. Middlesbrough, Manchester City and Wigan are all battling it out to sign the Portugual international and they are ready to firm up their interest before the transfer window slams shut on Friday. All three clubs are in the market for a new striker and they have been alerted to Gomes' possible availability. Benfica claim they do not want to lose Gomes, but their stance could change if the Portuguese giants fail to qualify for the lucrative group stages of the UEFA Champions League this week. Should Benfica crash out to FC Copenhagen, Benfica could be forced to cash-in on the former Fiorentina ace. Gomes' English suitors are believed to be travelling to Copehagen on Wednesday to cast an eye over the talented hit-man. The 31-year-old is thought to be keen on a move to England and Benfica could sanction a move if they receive the right deal for Gomes.

Interest

Gomes' UK representative Phil McTaggart confirmed a number of clubs were chasing the forward ahead of the close of the transfer window. "There has been a lot of interest in Nuno," McTaggart told skysports.com. "He is quality player who has played at the highest level all his career for club and country. "He would be a good addition for any team as he has always scored goals, but it all depends on Benfica. "We will wait and see what happens in the next few days."
