Defender reacts after fans jeer own team

Atletico Madrid defender Mariano Pernia has apologised for taunting his own supporters after scoring the equaliser against Mallorca on Sunday. The Spanish international was infuriated after the Atletico fans began to whistle and jeer their own team after going a goal down in the Primera Liga clash. But after levelling with 13 minutes to go, the 30-year-old ran behind the goal and cupped his hands to his ears in response to the provocation, but now regrets his actions.

Wound up

"I made a mistake with that gesture, but I was hot and wound up," Pernia told Marca. "We did not deserve the whistles. We were fighting hard to come back into the game. "The team turned things around and we managed to get something out of the game. "There is plenty of time, this is only the start. Now we have to work to silence the critics."
