Valencia defender Marco Caneira will be sidelined for up to five weeks with a thigh tear.
The 28-year-old suffered the injury during Portugal's Euro 2008 qualifier against Poland on Saturday.
Caneira was sent for scans earlier this week which have confirmed the muscle tear.
He will be out of action until the middle of next month, meaning he will miss the start of the UEFA Champions League group stage.
Valencia have been drawn against Chelsea, Schalke and Rosenborg and start their campaign against the Germans on Tuesday.
