Milan leave it late on away day in Siena

Milan needed a 91st minute volley from Alessandro Nesta to salvage a 1-1 draw from their trip to Siena. Having left out Kaka, Andrea Pirlo, Massimo Oddo and the injured Ronaldo ahead of midweek UEFA Champions League action, Milan could have struggled but on the contrary, made an impressive start. Alberto Gilardino, twice, went close to giving them an early advantage only for Siena - having survived an onslaught - to have the temerity to take the lead in the 25th minute, through former Middlesbrough misfit Massimo Maccarone. Milan's Nelson Dida and Kakha Kaladze were left red faced, after an embarrassing mix-up allowed Maccarone to nip in and open the scoring. Pippo Inzaghi was introduced in the second half from Milan's bench and had chances to equalise, as did fellow substitute, Massimo Ambrosini. For all their exertions, though, Milan ultimately flattered to deceive and had to rely on an effort from defender Nesta, who smashed home, after Siena had failed to clear Clarence Seedorf's free-kick. Nesta's strike clearly rattled the home side, who in the dying embers were reduced to ten-men, when Mario Frick saw red for a cumbersome tackle on an unsuspecting Seedorf, who in the last piece of action hit the bar. In Saturday's other Italian game, Lazio and Empoli could not be separated in a 0-0 stalemate at the Stadio Olimpico.
