Slovakian undergoes knee surgery

Stanislav Varga is set to return to action earlier than expected after undergoing surgery on his troublesome knee. The Slovakian defender has not featured for The Black Cats this season and will be sidelined for some time to come. But Roy Keane has been boosted by the news that Varga should not be ruled out for the 12 weeks he had initially feared. "Stan has had an op and so he won't be available for quite a while," Keane told the Sunderland Echo. "But the good news is that the knee problem did not prove to be as bad as was expected. "It was thought that he would be out for 12 weeks at least, but now it will be a lot less than that and that's good news in terms of him making a swifter recovery and being able to work on his rehab." If Varga's recovery goes as planned he should be able to challenge for a first-team place some time in December.
