Kasper Schmeichel is close to agreeing a new long-term deal with Manchester City.

Another academy graduate earns long-term City deal

Kasper Schmeichel is set to sign a new long-term contract with Manchester City following his impressive start to the season. Schmeichel has kept four clean sheets in the first six Premier League games of his career and goes into Saturday's game at Fulham as the club's first choice keeper. It is all a far cry from the end of last season when the young Dane was fourth in line behind Andreas Isaksson, Nicky Weaver and Joe Hart. However, Weaver has since departed to join Charlton, Isaksson has been troubled by injuries and Hart, crucially, picked up a knock on the eve of the opening day win at West Ham.

Very happy

City boss Sven Goran Eriksson admits that some of Schmeichel's positional play has been suspect, but expects him to become a better player with time. "Kasper's agent has been at Carrington for talks and he is very close to signing a new deal. I'm very happy with him," Eriksson said. "He is another one from the academy we are signing up on a long-term basis. That's good for the club. "Some of his decision-making has not always been right but you expect that from a 20-year-old. "The fact is he has kept four clean sheets out of six and you can't argue with that." Since Eriksson's arrival at Eastlands in the summer, City have handed new contracts to Stephen Ireland, Michael Johnson, Nedum Onuoha and Ishmael Miller, while Micah Richards is expected to agree terms before the end of the month.
