Sheffield United are hoping to give former Brazilian international Ze Maria his debut against Morecambe on Tuesday.
The 34-year-old has agreed a one-year deal at Bramall Lane and manager Bryan Robson is now hoping he can field Ze Maria in the Carling Cup.
Deal done
"I've spoken with Ze Maria's people and the player has agreed to join us," said Robson.
"We have given him a one-year deal because of his age but he has kept himself fit and so I'll probably give him a run in the cup.
"There will be changes for that game. I want to give some of the lads who haven't been involved a chance to show what they can do."
Loan deal
Meanwhile, United have allowed central defender Ryan Cresswell to join neighbours Rotherham.
The 19-year-old has agreed a three-month loan deal at Millmoor.
