Boothroyd explains defender's substitution

Adrian Boothroyd has soothed fears that Watford defender Jay DeMerit has suffered a serious injury. DeMerit picked up a calf injury in last week's 2-1 win at Cardiff City, but was fit to start Saturday's 1-1 draw at Queens Park Rangers. However, the American centre-half was replaced at half-time at Loftus Road after aggravating the problem. Watford boss Boothroyd, though, admits he only withdrew DeMerit as a precaution, rather than risk a lengthy injury absence. "He took a very nasty blow to the calf, a six-studded present from Wales," Boothroyd told the club's official website. "He was struggling to make the game, but got through it because that's the type of guy he is. "He just started to cramp up in the second half when he came out early, so I thought it best not to risk him as we need him fit for a longer period."
