Cattermole remains positive despite facing more competition to play for Boro
Lee Cattermole may earn a recall into the Middlesbrough team to face Manchester City at Eastlands on Sunday.
Boro have lost their last three games on their travels and so may opt for an extra man in midfield to stifle a resurgent City who are looking for their fifth successive home Premier League victory.
And this could lead to Cattermole stepping up, particularly as he is the last Boro player to score against City.
Speaking of his current situation, the 19-year-old told the Sunday Sun: "I haven't been playing a lot lately and it is frustrating.
Patient
"But I'm only 19 and I need to be patient. Obviously I'm confident in my own ability and I think I could definitely be in the side but it's always just a matter of time. I'll wait for my chance and make sure I take it when it comes.
"I've had several chats with the manager and he's great to be fair. He tells me his reasons for leaving me out when he has, he's honest about it. That's what you want as a player. He's told me to be patient and I'll get a chance.
"We've got a good squad, when you're competing in the Premier League you need one. Maybe last year we were a bit light in midfield whereas this year we've strengthened up a lot.
"It's harder for the lads but they all know if they're not playing well there are other lads waiting to take their place."
He could find himself competing with Mohammed Shawky for a starting berth against City.
Brilliant
"Shawky's been brilliant, in training and in the reserves," said Cattermole.
"He's a team player, he covers a lot of ground. He wins the ball and he gives it simple. He's good to play with.
"He doesn't speak much English but he's learning, and he'll be even better if he can pick up the Boro accent!"
