Benjani Mwaruwari has admitted that his free-scoring start to the season has boosted his confidence.

Striker feeling confident after excellent start to season

Portsmouth's Benjani Mwaruwari has admitted that his free-scoring start to the 2007/2008 campaign has boosted his confidence. The Zimbabwe captain has been in impressive form so far this season, managing six goals in eight Premier League matches. His strike in the 2-0 win over Fulham makes him joint-top scorer in the league with Arsenal's Emmanuel Adebayor. Benjani signed on at Fratton Park after making a £4.1million move from Auxerre and his recent form has gone a long way in paying back his transfer fee. The 29-year-old has already equalled his tally for the whole of last season, and has set his sights on scoring 15 goals for the current campaign.

Confidence player

"I don't follow the goal charts and I don't care who scores the goals so long as the team plays well and wins," he said. "My target (this season) is between 10 and 15 goals. Anything else above 15 would be a bonus for me and the manager. "All the strikers need to score goals to help the club do well and I am heading to do that. "I know that if I keep scoring I have the confidence back and I am a confidence player. "If you hit the ball hard enough and you are lucky it goes into the net and that's what happened against Fulham, even though it took a deflection."
