Espanyol striker gets the nod ahead of Madrid's Raul

Espanyol striker Raul Tamudo has been called up to the Spain squad to replace the injured David Villa. Villa withdrew after picking up a knock against Espanyol on Saturday and Luis Aragones has chosen Tamudo over Real Madrid veteran Raul. Tamudo spoke of his excitement and surprise at getting the call-up for the Euro 2008 qualifier against Denmark.

Congratulations

"I feel like a 20-year-old newcomer again," he explained. "It feels like it is the first time I have been called up. "It is a great feeling because I have been playing well for a while, but have realised that it is complicated because there are so many good forwards in the country. "Until yesterday, it did not even cross my mind until they called me on Sunday evening and I received messages of congratulations. "It is shame that it came about because someone is injured though."
Controversy
If Spain secure three points against Denmark then it will leave them in a strong position in Group F, but Tamudo recognises that it will not be easy in Aarhus. "If Spain win then qualification is almost assured," he said. "It will be a difficult game, but a victory would mean we are practically there." Tamudo was unconcerned that his selection had caused controversy, as many fans had expected to see Madrid's Raul make a return to the international fold. "I do not pay much attention to these things," he added. "I just want to enjoy this moment more than think about people's opinions because I have played in the first division for many years and scored goals."
