Elliott takes over from Robinson

Coventry City have named Joe Elliott as their new chairman in succession to Geoffrey Robinson. The Labour MP has revealed he is too busy to continue his role and he hands over to Elliott - a director at the club. The news comes in the wake of the resignation of managing director Paul Fletcher and the collapse of a proposed takeover of the club from American investors Manhattan Sports Capital.

Immediate effect

"On the resumption of Parliament on Monday, 8th October, it was quite clear to me that I could no longer continue as acting chairman of Coventry City Football Club for there are simply not enough hours in the day," said Robinson in a statement. "It had been my aim by the end of the recess to have achieved the Manhattan takeover and to return full time to Westminster. Sadly for other reasons I'll write about elsewhere, Manhattan and other negotiations did not come off. "So I must stand down now at the start of the new parliament so that I can properly conduct my Westminster and Constituency duties. "Other intensive negotiations are under way and they need full time attention. At my request and with the full support of the board, Joe Elliott has agreed to become chairman with immediate effect. "Joe is held in the highest esteem by Coventry City fans and I know he can count on your full support."
