The 24-year-old Barcelona forward, who will play club football alongside England international Toni Duggan next season, beat off competition from Germany's Dzsenifer Marozsan and Denmark's Pernille Harder to land the award.

"This is so amazing," Martens said upon receiving the accolade at the Champions League group stage draw.

"This is a big honour. I am really proud but I couldn't have achieved this without my team-mates. I'm speechless."

Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo won the men's award, beating Lionel Messi and Gianluigi Buffon to the prize.
