England Women defender Laura Bassett has joined Australian side Canberra United.

Bassett was the only England player at this summer's European Championships unattached to a club after Notts County folded in April due to debts owed to HM Revenue and Customs.

But the 34-year-old has now found a new team with Canberra confirming her signing in time for the 10th season of the Westfield W-League.

"I can't wait," Bassett told Canberra United's official website. "I'm so excited and I am really looking forward to meeting all the staff and players at this ambitious club.

"I am eager to start training with the team so I can fully immerse myself in the playing philosophy and culture of the club.

"I have only heard impressive things from players who have played in the W-League; positives such as the competitive fixtures, different playing styles and the players' commitment and professionalism."

New United coach Heather Garriock added: "Laura will be the backbone to our defence this season. She can either play centre-back or holding midfield, and having a solid spine is key for this season."
