Chris Hutchings has spoken of his pride after his six-year involvement with Wigan Athletic came to an end on Monday morning. Latics chairman Dave Whelan chose to wield the axe after Chelsea condemned Wigan to their sixth successive defeat on Saturday. Hutchings was promoted to manager following the resignation of Paul Jewell at the end of last season but he oversaw just two victories. The 50-year-old coach insists his time with the club was like a 'fairytale', and he has backed the players to prove their worth and drag Wigan up the table. "It's a journey we have been on together since the summer of 2001 and can only be described as a real life football fairytale," he said.

Heart

"When I was given the opportunity to manage this club I had no hesitation in taking on the challenge. "I believe I have assembled an excellent bunch of players, a superb squad of professionals, and I still firmly believe that over time they will prove their worth and push this club to the next level. "My only regret is that I will not be here to see that progression reach its summit. "Wigan Athletic will forever have a big place in my heart and I genuinely wish everyone associated with the place nothing but success in the future."
