Non-league side knock out Stockport on penalties
Staines Town stunned Stockport County in the FA Cup first-round replay after a penalty shoot-out win following a 1-1 draw at Wheatsheaf Park.
Dave Sargent converted the decisive spot-kick in front of a record crowd after Shaun Allaway had saved two of Stockport's penalties.
Earlier in the game, Staines took the lead through Adrian Toppin only for Matty McNeil to send the rearranged replay into extra-time.
Stockport were presented with a chance as early as the third minute when the ball broke to Anthony Elding, but he lashed his shot off target.
The non-league side responded well, with Chris Adamson saving from Dwayne Clarke and Charles Smith heading the resultant corner wide.
Quick reactions
On 10 minutes, Staines took the lead when McNeil's attempted clearance from a corner went across goal and Toppin reacted quickest to head past Adamson.
McNeil had an immediate chance to make amends, but headed Elding's cross over the bar before Paul Turnbull slashed a good chance wide for the League Two club.
Staines keeper Shaun Allaway kept Stockport at bay for much of the second half and was unfortunate to concede the equaliser on 78 minutes.
Adam Griffin whipped in a cross, Allaway made a fine reaction save from Elding, but the ball carried on to the far post where McNeil had a simple opportunity.
McNeil then turned provider to play in Elding with five minutes to go, but the striker lacked composure in front of goal and dragged his shot wide.
Penalty shout
With two minutes remaining, Staines were denied a blatant penalty when Gareth Risbridger almost had his shirt pulled off by Jason Taylor as the midfielder's volley bounced onto the crossbar.
In extra-time, Stockport came closest to grabbing a winner in the second period when Anthony Pilkington cut in from the left and was inches away from finding the top corner with his curling shot.
The excellent Allaway made two stops in the shoot-out before Sargent scored to set up a second-round tie at home to Peterborough United.
