Real coach plays down England link

Real Madrid coach Bernd Schuster has played down reports linking him with the England manager's job. Reports in Spain claimed that the German had already been contacted by Football Association chief executive Brian Barwick. Barwick has been charged with the task of finding the successor to Steve McClaren, who sacked in the wake of England's failure to qualify for Euro 2008.

Leave it

Quizzed on the reports, Schuster said: "We will leave it there, things get published every day. "But it surprised me to be mentioned." The 47-year-old was appointed at the Bernabeu this summer following the sacking of Fabio Capello - who has also been linked to the England post - after a successful spell in charge at La Liga minnows Getafe.
