Catalan pride

Real Madrid v Racing Santander

League leaders Real Madrid seem to have turned round their form from last season - they used to be very good away from home because they were clearly an attacking team that defended deep and counter-attacked with pace. Now they play much better at home where they feel backed by the fans and away from the Bernabeu they don't dominate the midfield as they should, or in a way that Bernd Schuster would like, so they need to sort that out - as Schuster keeps insisting. As for the Schuster as England manager rumours, well I'm not sure about that one! I don't think he was called up by the FA but there is a rumour doing the rounds that he may not be the coach of Real Madrid next season. If that is to be the case then that would be amazing but nothing surprises me anymore in Spanish football. Some people are saying that it could be Jose Mourinho in charge at the Bernabeu next season but we will see. At the moment, it's only a rumour. Racing Santander are one of the surprise packages of the season with Mohamed Tchite and Pedro Munitis going well up front. Racing have a very good midfield with former Deportivo player Aldo Duscher - who famously broke David Beckham's metatarsal before the 2002 World Cup - and Gonzalo Colsa in the centre. They also have Oscar Serrano on the left and Jorge Lopez on the right hand side - two lively players who are playing well also. This team are surprising everybody and keep an eye on the coach, Marcelino who is going to become a very good coach.

Espanyol v Barcelona

This is the first time I can remember that Espanyol come into this fixture with a good possibility of getting three points. I wouldn't say they're favourites but they are playing very well and are more than capable of beating Barcelona. And they are not scared of the possibility of beating their rivals, which makes it a double whammy for Espanyol fans. I don't think they are a Champions League side but we should get into the Uefa Cup next season. Or maybe it will be a season remembered for beating Barcelona and Real Madrid in the same season, which will be a first as generally we only beat one or the other, or indeed none at all. Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard has come under fire of late. There are loads of rumours and leaks from the Barcelona board that Rijkaard may be sacked if he doesn't improve things in the next two or three matches. I think that this is just a way of putting Rijkaard under pressure so he starts making big decisions, as he did against Lyon in the Champions League when he left Ronaldinho on the bench. I don't think it's anything more than that.

Real Betis v Atletico Madrid

Betis are really struggling and the atmosphere in and around the club is wrong. The chairman wants to sell his shares one day, the next day he says he doesn't. All that is unsettling the team - a very offensive team with a lot of new faces - and former Valencia coach, Hector Cuper, who of course took Valencia to two consecutive Champions League finals only to lose both, doesn't appear to be doing the job that they need. In Spain we say that football is like a small blanket - you either put it over your head and expose your feet, or the other way round. This can be used to describe Atletico Madrid who basically have gone from one extreme to the other. From having one of the tightest defences in la Liga to becoming a team that are leaking goals. But they score a lot so it's always fun to watch them! Sergio Aguero, the diminutive Argentina forward continues to progress and is becoming one of the top stars in Europe.

Valencia v Athletic Bilbao

Valencia have become more defensively stable under Ronald Koeman, but they will be bitterly disappointed to be out of the Champions League at this early stage. The reappearance of ex-Arsenal midfielder Edu, who we caught up with recently on Revista de La Liga, suggests that finally they have a midfield player who can pass the ball short or long and can help them dominate matches which they have been missing. Now to your e-mail...

Hi Guillem, How confident are you that Espanyol will beat Barça and overtake them next weekend? As a Barça fan, I'm not looking forward to this match at all as I can see Espanyol thumping us what with their good form this season and our terrible away form. Do you think that if Espanyol carry on playing as they are and Barça continue playing as badly as they are at the moment that they can realistically end the season ahead of us? Thanks, Mo in London GUILLEM SAYS: I don't think that Espanyol will finish ahead of Barcelona but I do think that the good doing of the coach, Ernesto Valverde and the Sporting Director, Paco Herrera has helped the side settle. They are coming out with statements bordering on the arrogant - very confident statements about what Espanyol can do. That's really pleasing for me! In the mean time, maybe we can go on a good run in the Copa del Rey which I know players are really looking forward to. Hello Guillem, As a Mallorca fan I feel firstly that ninth place is good compared to last season. However I feel that Mallorca need a new centre half because Ballesteros's temper has got him sent off quite a few times in recent years. Where do you think the team should strengthen in the transfer market? Do you think Mallorca can qualify for Europe? Thanks, Shivam GUILLEM SAYS: Yes, Mallorca need a centre back but we'll see what happens with Gutierrez Jonas if he eventually goes to Portsmouth or not. But I think Mallorca can qualify for Europe as they are having their best start in la Liga for decades and you can see they are a team that if they work hard - and Gregorio Manzano seems to make them work hard often enough - they will be fighting for sixth or seventh place that will take them through to the Uefa Cup. As usual it's not a matter of Mallorca buying what they need - it's generally a problem for Mallorca selling and then trying to find players to replace those they have sold. It's a difficult thing to be a Mallorca fan because every year seems it seems to be a different club. Hello Guillem hope you're well. I wanted to know which players Real Madrid are looking to buy in the transfer window. Which areas do you feel they need to strengthen? I am still not sure about the quality of the likes of Higuan and Marcelo. Chris Wharton, Poole GUILLEM SAYS: There was a story in Marca that Real Madrid wanted to get rid of six players and bring in two or three in the transfer window. The next day Pedrag Mijatovic and the chairman said they rely on everybody in the squad and they didn't want to bring in new players. I tend to believe that they don't want to change much and their lack of movement in the market suggest that that is the case. But if they need somebody, they need a midfielder that can help in the centre when Gago is not having a good day or Guti either. Somebody much more complete - like a Patrick Vieira. There isn't many players available but even Schuster said that Michael Ballack would be a good solution earlier in the season but now of course that's completely off the radar. I don't trust Marcelo but I do trust Higuain. In the near future he will be one of the stars of Real Madrid, believe me. I have spoken to some of the coaching staff at Madrid and they believe that as well.
