Roma skipper clarifies comments about international return
Francesco Totti says his comments that he could return to the Italy squad were tongue in cheek.
The Roma captain has not played for his country since the 2006 World Cup and officially confirmed his retirement from international football in July this year.
However, in an interview with GQ magazine, the 31-year-old said he would return to the Azzurri squad for Euro 2008 in the event of an emergency or injuries.
Totti, though, has now stated that he has no plans to return to the international arena and that his original comments were made in jest.
Absurd
"I was asked for fun, if I would go to the European Championship if all the forwards got injured," Totti told Gazzetta dello Sport's website.
"I was asked an absurd question and I gave an absurd answer.
"That does not mean I have changed my mind about my future with the national team. It's a closed chapter.
"This clarification is necessary out of respect to my (former) team-mates, who deservedly qualified for Euro 2008.
"I'm sure they will continue to do well."
