Rams boss eager to improve atmosphere

New Derby manager Paul Jewell insists one of his first tasks at Pride Park is to change the atmosphere at the club. The Rams are rock bottom of the Premier League having taken just six points from their opening 15 games, scoring just five goals and shipping 34. Jewell's first game at the helm ended in an agonising injury-time defeat at Sunderland, and the former Wigan boss accepts that the players need a lift.

Noisy

He told the club's official website: "What we've got to do is instil a bit of belief in the players because they're on the floor at the moment. "It's a quiet group and it's a quiet football club. I want to change that. I want to get them skipping into work and get the place vibrant, noisy and see people rolling their sleeves up. "They're decent players but just very low on confidence. It's my job and the job of my staff to build that confidence up." And Jewell insists that he is starting with a clean slate in terms of selection and has urged every player to show what they have to offer.
Up for grabs
He added: "I picked the team on Saturday not knowing too much about the players. "I'm trying to find out more about them every day. It may be a month or three weeks before I know who can do the job and who can't. "I'm not ruling anybody in at the moment and I'm not ruling anybody out. I've said to the players that there are places up for grabs - our league position means nobody's position in the team is safe. "I want them to show me what they can do on the training pitch. And if they're out of the team show me what they can do to get in it. "With one or two injuries we could be a little bit short on numbers. No one is guaranteed their place and no one is out of the picture."
