New England boss faces media for first time

Fabio Capello insists he has realised a long-term ambition in taking the England job following his first press conference as coach of the national side. The Italian, who boasts titles with European giants Milan and Real Madrid on his impressive CV, faced the assembled media at a central London hotel, live on Sky Sports News. Capello's appointment has divided opinion in the game, with some critics bemoaning the fact that the Football Association have not appointed a home-grown manager. Others point to the abject failure of Steve McClaren's time at the helm, during which England failed to qualify for Euro 2008, and the lack of suitable candidates as the reason for the second overseas appointment to what is regarded as one of the toughest jobs in football. Capello's first task will be to lift the England squad from the doldrums and focus their attention on the forthcoming World Cup 2010 qualification campaign, with Euro 2008 nemesis Croatia looming once again. His first game in charge will be the Wembley friendly against Euro 2008 co-hosts Switzerland on 6th February. Capello officially starts work on 7th January and has signed a four-and-a-half year deal with the FA. The Italian spoke only briefly in faltering English before then responding to questions in his native language. He said: "I am very proud and honoured to be the England manager. I have wanted this job for a long time."
