Young defender has future with club

Rangers assistant manager Ally McCoist would like to see defender Alan Hutton spend the majority of his career at Ibrox. The 23-year-old has been impressive this season for club and country, which has led him to be linked to teams including Newcastle and Tottenham. The right-back has also reportedly caught the eye of Manchester United and Lazio but McCoist wants nothing more than for Hutton to stay in Scotland and help Rangers to success.

Great career

"But I'd like him to stay here for a long time and win things with Rangers," McCoist, aware of the reports linking Hutton to other clubs, told The Sun. "We don't want to lose players of his quality. "I have no doubt Alan is destined for great things in his career, but I believe those great things can be with Rangers. "He is still young and has a bit to learn and, with a bit of luck, he can learn at our place over the next few years."

No rush

Meanwhile, McCoist has played down claims he could be being lined up as successor to manager Walter Smith. The 45-year-old told Rangers News: "I have no idea if this is a grooming process for me - you would have to ask the chairman that. "I'm not trying to run here before I can walk."
