Premier League referee chosen for competition

The Premier League's Howard Webb has been chosen as one of the 12 referees for Euro 2008. Webb and his assistants Darren Cann and Mike Mullarkey will provide the only English representation in the competition. The Sheffield-based referee, who has been picked out by Uefa, will be monitored in his early games before a decision is made about whether he will stay involved for the later rounds. Webb has become one of England's most respected referees and this year took charge of the Carling Cup final between Chelsea and Arsenal. His first international match was Northern Ireland's 1-1 draw with Portugal in November 2005, and he has also been officiating in the UEFA Champions League since last season. Webb follows in the footsteps of Graham Poll, the English referee at the last World Cup who gave Croatian Josip Simunic three yellow cards before sending him off. He will be joined in Euro 2008 by Belgian Frank de Bleeckere, Norway's Tom Henning Ovrebo and Slovakian Lubos Michel. The other referees chosen for next summer's tournament are Konrad Plautz (Austria), Herbert Fandel (Germany), Kyros Vassaras (Greece), Roberto Rosetti (Italy), Pieter Vink (Holland), Manuel Mejuto Gonzalez (Spain), Peter Frojdfelt (Sweden) and Massimo Busacca (Switzerland). Craig Thomson, of Scotland, has been chosen as one of the eight fourth officials.
