Thompson banned for Bluebirds, virus hits Blades

Cardiff City are without in-form striker Steven Thompson, while a virus has struck the Sheffield United squad. Thompson misses the visit of the Blades after being sent off in last week's 1-0 defeat at Bristol City. He will serve a three-match suspension, although his place will not go to veteran striker Robbie Fowler after he sprained an ankle in a midweek reserve game. However, Cardiff boss Jones could call on fit-again Jimmy-Floyd Hasselbaink and Steve MacLean as he looks to find the solution to his side's ailing fortunes in front of goal. Riccardo Scimeca has returned to full training following his groin operation, but will not have recovered in time to feature, while midfielder Trevor Sinclair remains sidelined.

United news

Bryan Robson has confirmed a virus has swept through the Bramall Lane ranks this week, although he has not disclosed the identity of the players affected. However, the Blades manager is optimistic that those who featured against Barnsley last week will be available. Lee Hendrie made only his second appearance in over two months when stepping off the bench against Barnsley and is expected to be named among the substitutes again. James Beattie will be out to last the full 90 minutes after being affected by illness last week, while Billy Sharp will hope to retain his place in Robson's starting line-up. Rob Hulse (broken leg), Derek Geary and Danny Webber (both knee) all remain long-term absentees.
