City chief ready to open Thaksin's chequebook again

Sven Goran Eriksson has told Sky Sports News Manchester City are closing in on a big name signing. The high-flying Eastlands club are looking to cement their current position of fourth by strengthening their squad now the transfer window has re-opened. Eriksson has been backed unequivocally thus far in his tenure by owner Thaksin Shinawatra and it would appear financial assistance will again be forthcoming in January. City are expected to bring in a striker, with players of the calibre of Dimitar Berbatov, Nicolas Anelka and Roque Santa Cruz all linked with a move to Manchester. However, while conceding he would open the City doors to any of the aforementioned, the Swede accepts the trio are unlikely to be lured. "You named three names; I would open the door for all three of them, or two of them, or one of them," he told Sky Sports News. "They are very good names but I think they are extremely difficult to reach."

Expectation not hope

While loath to disclose too many details with regards possible signings, Eriksson was willing to concede he was hopeful of luring another top name to the club. "Yes, I expect something more will happen. One or two more (signings). "I hope so, we're working on that. Sometimes we think we are close but the day after we are less close. It's not easy to get players in January, it's understandable. "All clubs have their objectives - to get in Europe, to stay in the division. "It's difficult but we are trying. We've already signed (Nery) Castillo and he will be a very good player for us. He is ready to play. "All the papers, documents are done so that is good and he is available for tomorrow."
