Boro boss eyes targets, while dismissing Downing bids
Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate says he is in talks with 'two or three players', while insisting that the club have not received any offers for Stewart Downing.
Boro have been linked with bids for Heerenveen's Afonso Alves and Lyon's Fred as Southgate looks to bolster his squad in the January transfer window.
And while Southgate refused to reveal the names of his targets, he explained that he plans to be cautious in putting all of his efforts into signing one player.
"We are talking to different clubs about two or three players because if we go for only one and that falls down for whatever reason then we'd be left with nothing," he told the club's official website.
"So all options are open this way."
Asked whether Boro fans could expect a new signing in the next week, Southgate replied: "Possibly. I can't put my hand on my heart and say there won't be or there will be, because it is difficult to put a timescale on it."

"There's lots of talk about Stewy but we've had stronger interest in him in the past than we have had recently."
