England manager still considering candidates
Fabio Capello has admitted the choice of England captain is his most important decision as manager.
John Terry is waiting for the results of a scan to determine whether he can step up his comeback from a foot injury, but it is unlikely that he will be able to feature against Switzerland next month in Capello's first match in charge.
There has been speculation that David Beckham could get the armband for one game only as he wins his 100th England cap.
However, the likes of Steven Gerrard, Rio Ferdinand and Michael Owen could also come under consideration and Capello concedes he has yet to make the decision.
"The captaincy is a very important decision," said the Italian.
"There are many things I have to evaluate and I must come up with a choice that is right.
"A captain must be a leader, someone who carries the team, somebody that, in every moment, is important for the team.
"I am still deciding whether to pick a definitive captain or a provisional one. First, I need to know all the candidates well because it is such an important choice."
Perplexed
While Capello may not have chosen his captain, he has revealed that he is almost sure who would be in his first-choice XI after studying the Premier League in recent weeks.
"I have seen things which go beyond my expectations but also things that left me perplexed," he said.
"Taking into account what I have seen so far and the England games I have watched, the team I want is in my head.
"But to have an idea of what I can achieve, first I need to know the players well - not only their characteristics with the ball but their tactical sense on and off the ball."
