Paul Merson said Birmingham deserved at least a point from their clash with Chelsea at St. Andrew's.
Soccer Saturday Expert Verdict
Birmingham City 0-1 Chelsea
In their last Premier League match Birmingham City beat Arsenal. According to Paul Merson, had they come up with the same result against Chelsea on Saturday, it would have been undeserved.
But Claudio Pizarro scored the sole goal at St Andrews, only the second of his career, and Cheslea again picked up three points when not at their best and without some key players.
"They must be sick, Birmingham," said Merson. "They deserved at least a point, there is no question about that.
"But again Chelsea grind out these wins when they have loads of players out. They keep on winning and hanging on to Arsenal and Manchester United.
"Birmingham worked hard and they must be so sick. Chelsea got everybody behind the ball. Ricardo Carvalho and Alex were a different class today, and (Petr) Cech, and that tells you how unlucky Birmingham were if them three were outstanding."
Merson also said it was a Jekyl and Hyde performance from the goalscorer, who, until he found the net, 'looked shocking'.
Merson said: "Pizarro came on for (Shaun) Wright-Phillips, who went off with a twisted ankle, and he just struggled so badly, he looked shocking.
"Just before the goal he dribbles into the box and dives over like a little lady or a little girl and the ball goes out for a corner and he gets booked for a diving.
"Then it is a great ball by (Juliano) Belletti (from the corner) and he leaves Rafael Schmitz and it is a real, real good header. After that, for the next 15 minutes, he looks like a player; he is coming short, he is flicking it, laying it off and holding it up.
"It's just confidence but again Chelsea win."
