Portsmouth striker Jermain Defoe has been called into the England squad following Agbonlahor's withdrawal.
Weekend just gets better for Portsmouth new boy
Portsmouth striker Jermain Defoe has been rewarded for a bright debut with an England call, following Gabriel Agbonlahor's withdrawal from Fabio Capello's first squad.
Aston Villa front-man Agbonlahor had looked likely to make his international debut against Switzerland on Wednesday night having been a surprise inclusion on Capello's part.
A series of mature displays this season for Villa have seen Agbonlahor catch the Italian's attention but on Sunday he was forced off against Fulham at Craven Cottage and now misses out for his country.
Agbonlahor's disappointment at the 2-1 defeat was exacerbated by a hamstring injury that saw him substituted at half-time.
While Agbonlahor will rue a weekend of ill-fortune, Defoe must feel his luck is turning after missing out on Capello's initial squad of 30, which has since been whittled down to 23.
Defoe delighted the Fratton Park faithful on Saturday when his debut goal earned Portsmouth a point at home to Chelsea.
