The executive chair of Everton in the community, Dr Denise Barrett-Baxendale, discusses the work done by the club to help the city

Everton in the Community (EitC) has firmly established itself as one of the top sporting charities in the UK.

Beginning life as part of Everton Football Club's community department, EitC is now at the forefront of social intervention across Merseyside, employing around 200 people and running 60 different community-focused programmes.

EitC help fund more than 2,000 different charities and their tireless work was widely recognised in 2016 as they collected 19 separate awards, including the Premier League's Community Club of the Year at the Northwest Football Awards.

The organisation is open 365 days a year, and in addition to running the Everton Free School, which opened in 2012, it oversees 14 disability teams across different sports.

Everton's deputy chief executive, Dr Denise Barrett-Baxendale, is the executive chair of Everton in the Community.
