Valencia denied win by late leveller

Xavi's last-gasp goal salvaged Barcelona a 1-1 draw with Valencia in the first leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final at Camp Nou. Valencia looked to be heading for a shock win courtesy of David Villa's 70th minute opener, until Xavi popped up with almost the final kick of the game to draw Barca level. Barca started on the front foot and came close to scoring after just six minutes with Xavi seeing his shot pushed out by Timo Hildebrand and from the rebound Samuel Eto'o and Lionel Messi saw shots blocked off the line. Thierry Henry was denied by Hildebrand on 35 minutes with the keeper pushing out the Frenchman's fierce long-range strike. Barcelona continued to pour forward in the second half with Messi wasting a great chance to score when he hit a weak shot at Hildebrand after being teed up by Deco. Hildebrand kept out Messi again on 58 minutes before he palmed out a shot from Eto'o as Barca went in search of the opener. Valencia broke the deadlock against the run of play on 70 minutes when Javier Arizmendi crossed for Villa to score from close-range. Barca laid siege to the Valencia goal in the closing stages and grabbed a deserved equaliser deep into injury-time when Xavi drilled home after Eto'o had seen his shot kept out by Hildebrand.
