Southampton defender Claus Lundekvam has had another operation on his troublesome ankle.
Norwegian fears his career could be over
Claus Lundekvam is facing an anxious wait to see whether his playing career is over after having another operation on his troublesome ankle.
The Southampton defender picked up the injury in the final game of last season and underwent surgery in the summer.
The problem has prevented him from playing this season but he had felt he was closing in on a return to action.
However, he recently broke down in training and the club were left with no option but to send him back under the knife after it was confirmed that the tendon had once again come away from the bone.
The 35-year-old is not yet sure how successful the operation has been but accepts that at this stage of his career there is now a chance he may never play again.
Depressing
"It is depressing. I thought things were going OK and I was really looking forward to getting back playing," Lundekvam told the club's
official website.
"There was no alternative to further surgery and that will decide my future. At the very least I will be back on crutches for several weeks.
"The surgeon will look at the ankle and then we will look at the options. It may be that I can have another go at making a comeback but we will have to wait and see.
"I needed to have the operation regardless of playing again and now we just have to look at how it has gone and where we go from here."
