Spartans hold Gretna talks

Non-league Spartans have been linked with a buy-out of SPL crisis club Gretna.

Non-leaguers linked with takeover

Non-league Spartans have been linked with a buy-out of SPL crisis club Gretna. Gretna are in real danger of going out of business and have already entered administration. A number of interested parties are looking at the Raydale Park outfit, and one of those is Edinburgh-based Spartans - who could in theory take their place in Division One next season - as Gretna have already been relegated from the SPL. Although Spartans' current ground does not meet SFL requirements, they are building a new 3,000 capacity stadium which should be finished by August.

Exploratory talks

"We've had exploratory talks with the Gretna administrator, the SPL and the SFL," said Spartans general manager Derek Rodier. "We're in the process of building a new 3,000 capacity stadium which would be completed by August. "We're an ambitious club and everything we're doing meets SFL standards." SFL chief David Longmuir insisted that any move by Spartans or another club currently outside the professional ranks, would have to be examined rigorously. "In any set of circumstances, the SFL would carry out a proper and thorough application process for the admission of a new team into our set-up," said Longmuir. Gretna are due to play Inverness on Saturday as the SPL confirmed that the stricken club will fulfill their remaining fixtures, although there remains a real fear they will not be able to do so due to their circumstances.
