Huntly are hoping that Kevin Keegan could help them take Gretna's place in the Scottish Football League.

Non-league side hoping to take Gretna's place

Huntly are hoping that Kevin Keegan could help them take Gretna's place in the Scottish Football League. Scottish Premier League side Gretna have already entered administration and there is a danger they could go out of business. That would open up a spot in the SFL and non-league side Spartans have already opened talks with the authorities about coming in to replace them. However, Huntly are also confident they can acquire professional status thanks to their links with Newcastle manager Keegan. "We're an extremely ambitious club and have already sounded out the SFL," Huntly chief executive Robin Dunseath told the Daily Record. "Keegan has been instrumental in helping us set up our youth system.

Constant contact

"Now we're getting ready to have more talks with him in the next couple of weeks in light of recent developments with the Gretna situation. "Kevin has been in constant contact with us, while some of our promising youngsters have been down to Newcastle for training and he's keen to help us move on to the next level." Huntly failed to buy Clydebank in 2002 and Gretna were admitted to the senior ranks instead, but Dunseath claims he always had fears about the future of the Borders team. He said: "Gretna were admitted to the SFL at our expense. Back then, though, I could see this situation developing with all their financial problems. "They put all their eggs in one basket with one guy having all the money but we won't make that mistake. "We tried to buy Clydebank six years ago but hopefully by doing things differently this time we'll have a better outcome. "We're the most successful team in the Highland League and want to be in the strongest possible position should a vacancy arise in the SFL."
