Derby land Zadkovich on two-year deal

Derby County manager Paul Jewell has started rebuilding his side for next season by swooping for Ruben Zadkovich. The 21-year-old Australian impressed during a recent trial period at Pride Park and becomes Jewell's first signing since the club's relegation to the Championship was confirmed in March. Zadkovich, who can play in central midfield or right-back, has signed a two-year contract but is ineligible to play for The Rams until the 2008/09 campaign as he left his former club Sydney FC to become a free agent outside of the transfer window. "Ruben impressed us enormously in training," Jewell told the club's official website.

Interest

"A number of clubs have been interested in him, and we wanted to make sure we didn't miss out on a fantastic talent." It is reported that Crystal Palace boss Neil Warnock was amongst those tracking Zadkovich, who began his career in Queens Park Rangers' youth and reserve sides. Zadkovich then signed for Notts County in March 2005, before moving to Sydney six months later. Zadkovich made 42 appearances for Sydney, scoring two goals, and recently earned a call-up to the Australia international side after previously representing his country at Under 20 and Under 23 level.
