United assistant likely to be offered long-term contract

Benfica remain determined to appoint Carlos Queiroz as their new coach, according to reports in Portugal. The Manchester United assistant manager has been heavily linked with the Benfica post since Jose Antonio Camacho quit last month. United boss Sir Alex Ferguson expressed his confidence that Queiroz would not be linking up with Benfica next season. However, reports in Queiroz's homeland persist that he is wanted on a long-term contract in the summer. Benfica are willing to offer the former Sporting Lisbon coach a four-year deal in order to end his second stint as Ferguson's No.2 at Old Trafford. According to the reports, contact has been made with United, with a view to agreeing a deal at the end of the campaign. Meanwhile, former Bolton and Newcastle manager Sam Allardyce has also been linked with the Benfica vacancy.
